Isuri Anuradha is an all-round BEng (Hons) Software Engineering graduate from IIT who has
achieved much success following graduation. Isuri is currently employed as a Research Assistant
at University of Colombo School of Computing, which is one of the leading state owned
universities in Sri Lanka. Following are the excerpts of the interview with Isuri who shared her
thoughts on her journey at IIT.

1. Can you give a brief introduction to yourself?
I’m Isuri Anuradha from Gampaha. I am the only child of my family. Currently I’m following
my Master of Philosophy at University of Colombo. My research interests are on Natural
language processing and Deep Learning.

2. Let us know a bit of your school education.
I completed my A/L in physical science stream at Yasodara Devi Balika College, Gampaha.
During the time I was a secretary of school ICT club, President of Astronomical society and was
also a member of Buddhist association, Science club and the school netball club where I was
able to represent my school in all island competitions and won a few also.

3. What made you decide you follow your higher education at IIT?
From the days of my childhood, I had a dream to be an Engineer and follow Computer Science
for my higher studies. Just after finishing my A/Ls, I decided to continue my higher education atIIT because of IIT’s reputation in Sri Lanka. Many well-known individuals from the IT industry
recommend IIT as a best place to follow Software Engineering degree in the private sector. IIT’s
industrial placement year was also advantageous as it created a valuable opportunity to obtain
industrial exposure.

4. How was your student life and experiences like at IIT?
IIT provides a decent facility to students with an amazing experience. Although, we had to be
focused on studies and coursework most of the time, we spared time to participate in societies
like IEEE, WIE and Rotaract to where we gathered knowledge and soft-skills. When speaking of
the culture at IIT, it is a place where Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims get together and celebrate
each and every festival as one family.

5. What are your notable achievements at IIT?

Being selected for Google Summer of Code in 2018 was indeed one of the biggest achievements
in my life where only few Sri Lankans got selected. I am certain that this increased my passion
for IT even further.Locally, my participation for a session on Server-side scripting language (PHP) organized by REVPORT, Sri Lanka has indeed added value and knowledge during my IIT days.

6. Has IIT shaped you for corporate success? If so, how?
The support and guidance I received from IIT’s academic staff was highly commendable and
guided me on my correct path to growth. They were always ready to share their knowledge,
experiences and information with the students. IIT not only tries to make perfect computer
science or software engineering graduates but also a people with good qualities to the society.

7. What are your fondest moments at IIT?
My undergraduate life is full of remarkable experiences and achievements. I obtained a First
class Hons for Software Engineering degree from University of Westminster, UK. During my
time at IIT, I participated in Google Summer of Code and became a winner in 2018. This
influenced me to enhance my international exposure through a numerous of other opportunities
such as GFOSS and GSOC Awareness workshops in Greece. I had a rare opportunity to present
my final year research project in front of domain experts at ‘Women in Machine Learning’ in
Vancouver, Canada, too.

8. What are your reasons to recommend IIT to students?
As a student, it is important that you always follow your passion and choose a place where you
can follow to your passion. If you are interested in Software Engineering and like to dedicate
your next 4 years with maximum commitment, IIT is the best place to have an international level
bachelor’s degree in Sri Lanka combined with both theoretical and practical experiences. One-
year industry experience and one-year individual research project will directly impact your future
career and will act as a catalyst to new beginnings with international exposure.
